The truck is still running at the end of the gravel lane, because turning the key off would mean getting out.
There is a dish on the passenger seat under a sheet of foil. It was hot when he put it there and now it is only just warm, and in about ten minutes it will be a covered dish that a man drove three miles and did not carry to a door. He has done this before. Once in February, twice in the spring, and once last Thursday, which he has not mentioned to anybody, including his wife.
In the console there is a spiral notebook with a rubber band round it. In the back, in pencil, there are six names. He added them one at a time across six years, and he prays over that page most mornings while the coffee runs, and not one of those six people has any idea their name is written down anywhere.
At church there is a laminated sheet by the coat hooks with the visitation rota on it. Four names, printed, updated every quarter. His is not one of them and never has been, and nobody has ever said a word to him about it either way. That is the part he cannot get round. If somebody had sat him down and told him no, he would have something to hold, something to answer. Instead there was only quiet, ordinary, unremarkable quiet, year after year, until he agreed with it without noticing and decided he must not be the sort of man who does that sort of thing.
And you know the inside of that truck, because you have been sitting in one of your own. Ready for years. Nobody stopping you. Waiting on a word that has never once come, from somebody who does not even know you are waiting for it.

The one man Jesus would not take with Him
Let me name the weight first, because I think it gets carried in silence more than anything else I meet.
It is not that you are lazy. You have been ready so long that the readiness itself has started to feel like a joke you are telling on yourself. It is not that you are proud, either. If anything you have gone the other way, so far the other way that you now have a settled explanation for why it was never you: you are not gifted enough, not trained enough, not the sort they pick. And underneath all of that there is a small, grinding suspicion that if you were genuinely called, somebody would have noticed by now. Scripture supplies the written ground, and the Holy Spirit keeps this present truth under Christ’s authority.
That suspicion is the heaviest thing in the truck, and it is not from God.
There is a man in Mark's gospel who had every reason to think the same. He had just been set free, in front of a whole district, and the first thing he did was ask to get in the boat and go with Jesus. It is the most understandable request in the book. Take me with You. Put me with the ones who are properly sent.
Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.Mark 5:19
Read that slowly, because it is the one place in the gospels where a man asks to join the sent ones and is told no, and the no is not a rejection at all. It is a redirection with an address on it. Go home. Go to your friends. Tell the people who already know your name what God has done.
He was not put on a list. He was not given a title, a training, or a hand on the head in front of the congregation. He was given a direction and a doorway, and he went, and the whole region heard about it.
Now hold that against your own lane. You have been waiting for the boat. Jesus has been pointing at the house. Scripture supplies the written ground, and the Holy Spirit keeps this present truth under Christ’s authority.
And notice what Jesus did not attach to the sending. No qualification. No waiting period. No second confirmation from a third party. He had already done the thing that qualified the man, and the man was carrying it in his own body when he turned toward home. That is what makes a person sent: not the noticing, not the naming, not the rota, but the Lord who did the sending.
Hear me on the other half of this, because I am a shepherd and I will not hand you something that pulls you out of your own house. Nothing here asks you to walk out of a commitment, step over anybody, or take a place that was not offered to you. The rota is not the problem and the people who keep it are not the problem. The rota was simply never the door. A covered dish and a knock on a screen door has never once required a printed list, and it never will.
Here is what I want you to see, and it may take a second to land, because it has been sitting under everything for years.
You have not been forbidden. You have been unasked. Those two things feel identical from the inside of a parked truck, and they are not remotely the same. Nobody ever refused you. There was simply a silence where you expected a voice, and somewhere in there you started treating that silence as a verdict, when a silence has never once been able to issue one. Scripture supplies the written ground, and the Holy Spirit keeps this present truth under Christ’s authority.
And the reason the silence went on is far more ordinary than the meaning you gave it. People are busy. Lists get printed. Nobody sat in a room and decided about you. There is no verdict to overturn, which is exactly why no verdict is ever going to arrive.
So the word you have been waiting on is not coming, and that is not the tragedy you have quietly made it. It is not coming because it was already given, in a boat, on a shore, to a man who wanted the boat and was handed his own front door instead. Scripture supplies the written ground, and the Holy Spirit keeps this present truth under Christ’s authority.
You are already sent. Not promoted, not platformed, not scaled up. Sent, which is a smaller and far more solid word, and it has an address on it: six names, a gravel lane, a screen door three miles from your house. Scripture supplies the written ground, and the Holy Spirit keeps this present truth under Christ’s authority.
And if that lane is the whole of it, and it stays the whole of it for the rest of your life, you have not received a lesser thing. Hidden is not a holding pattern. The man in Mark went home and stayed home, and heaven does not keep a smaller record of it. Scripture supplies the written ground, and the Holy Spirit keeps this present truth under Christ’s authority.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the sending is not a favor somebody owes you, it is standing that has been given to you already and it is not another person's to grant or withhold. The men Christ said this to had just tried something in front of a crowd and failed at it, and He did not send them off to become larger men first. He named the smallest thing growing in their own fields, and then He told them to open their mouths at a mountain. Yours is not the four printed names on the laminated sheet. It is six years of a silence you turned into an answer. Speak to it, out loud, with your hand open, because a silence has never once been corrected by a man thinking hard about it at the end of a lane. What comes of the lane after that is His to decide, and however He answers, you are sent this morning either way. Scripture supplies the written ground, and the Holy Spirit keeps this present truth under Christ’s authority.
- Waiting, you have had six years of me and you do not get a seventh, and I say that in the name of Jesus. The Lord sent a man home to his own friends with nothing in his hands but what God had done for him, and that road was already his. I am sent, and I have been sent the whole time I sat at the end of the lane; the written Word and the Holy Spirit establish this under Christ's authority.
- Gravel lane, you are not a closed road, you are an unwalked one, and today I walk you as a sent man and not a hopeful one. The Word of God says the Good Shepherd goes before His sheep, so wherever this road ends, the Lord is standing there already and I arrive behind Him and never ahead of Him; the written Word and the Holy Spirit establish this under Christ's authority.
- Lord Jesus, You are the One who sends, and You sent me before there was ever a printed list with my name missing from it. I am not asking human authorization again, because a word You have spoken waits on no echo, and what You have sent nobody else has to second; the written Word and the Holy Spirit establish this under Christ's authority.
