One gold square would not leave the broom.
It clung to the bristles with static while the cleaner crossed the empty hall. Paper cups had been stacked. The stage lights were cold. Under row twelve, bright scraps gathered around chair legs where a crowd had danced only hours earlier.
Nobody applauded the broom. Nobody saw the cleaner lift each chair, reach beneath it, and return it to the floor without a sound. By sunrise the room would look untouched, and that was the point.
Perhaps your work feels like the part that begins after meaningful things end. Others sing, build, decide, create. You wipe, count, carry, answer, sort, and leave the place ready for people who may never know your hands were there.

The Lord is present after the crowd
Paul gives ordinary labor an extraordinary direction. He does not promise that wholehearted work earns promotion or recognition. He changes its address: the work is done unto the Lord.
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.Colossians 3:23
Your ordinary work is already commissioned to Christ. This is the written Word's valuation, not a motivational slogan, and the Holy Spirit makes it living in the actual movement of your hands. The empty room is not empty of God.
That does not make every task pleasant. The bin may leak. Your shoulders may ache. A schedule may be unreasonable and worth addressing through proper channels. Calling work commissioned does not require pretending conditions are good.
It means the broom does not wait for human attention to become sacred. The same Jesus praised in the songs remains Lord when the last cable is coiled. The celebration and the cleanup do not compete for His presence.
Your hands belong to God before anybody measures their output. Scripture turns all honest work toward the Lord, and the Holy Spirit carries dignity into tasks that disappear when done well. You possess that dignity now, without a promise of reward attached.
This guard matters. Faithful work is not a lever. You cannot sweep hard enough to make God owe you a raise, a new role, or public gratitude. That would turn worship into a transaction and burden your hands with an outcome they cannot control.
Nor does hiddenness mean you have failed to step into calling. The written Word directs all honest work to the Lord, and the Holy Spirit makes that commission living without requiring attention. Some work is hidden because its goodness is a clear floor, an answered message, a clean cup, a door ready to open. Invisible results are still real results, but even results are not the measure of your worth.
There is joy available here, but it is not compulsory brightness. Some mornings the work feels satisfying. Some mornings it is simply work, and faithfulness has no sparkle at all. The gold paper on the floor does not require you to manufacture a cheerful mood before you sweep it.
Christ receives truth, not performance. You can be tired and still commissioned. You can ask for help, report a broken tool, take the break provided, and refuse unsafe speed. Ordinary work offered to God remains ordinary enough to need ordinary wisdom.
The broom also has a stopping place. When your assigned floor is clear and your time is done, laying the handle down can honor God as surely as lifting it. Rest is not a reward for becoming indispensable.
Tomorrow may bring the same floor again. Repetition does not reduce commission into failure. Daily bread is daily, and much good work repeats because people keep living in the rooms it serves. Faithfulness can circle a familiar row without going nowhere.
You are fully seen in the unseen task. The written Word names the Lord as the true audience, and the Holy Spirit is present with no clipboard and no demand that you prove devotion through exhaustion. Rest, safety, fair treatment, and honest limits remain good.
The gold square clinging to the broom is not resisting your calling. It is inside it.
You do not have two lives, one spiritually significant and one made of supplies, floors, keys, screens, and schedules. Christ is Lord of both because there is only one life in His hands.
You are commissioned in the task beneath your palms. Scripture says whatsoever you do may be done unto the Lord, and the Holy Spirit carries worship into the sweep without turning the sweep into a spectacle. This work is His now because you are His now.
Please hear the freedom inside that: your calling does not require an escape from ordinary work. It also does not guarantee you remain in the same job. Either may change through wise decisions. But no future change gets to despise the faithfulness of this morning.
There is no challenge here to work harder. There is no demand to volunteer extra hours or ignore fatigue. Your hands are not more holy when overused. Commissioned work includes truthful boundaries because the worker also belongs to Christ.
The hall becomes ready. The doors open. People enter without seeing the before. You are still fully seen.
Your work is received without becoming currency. The written Word settles its address, the Holy Spirit fills its present dignity, and every consequence remains with God. Sweep the one gold square if it is yours to sweep. Then let your hands rest.
Declare this over yourself
- Confetti under the empty chairs, you do not make this work lesser than the celebration that scattered you. The written Word directs whatsoever I do to the Lord, so in the name of Jesus these ordinary hands are commissioned now.
- Fear that hidden work means a hidden life of lesser worth, leave my hands. The Holy Spirit is present after the last cheer, and God's seeing gives dignity without demanding recognition.
- Lord Jesus, You are Lord of the broom, the stage, the open door, and my rest. The written Word addresses my work to You and the Holy Spirit gives it life, so I offer today's honest labor within honest limits and refuse to turn faithfulness into a lever for reward.
