The Closed RoomRevelation 3:8

The Carpet Outside Room Four

This message is for the room at the end of the corridor you have carried the urn to for four years and never once walked into, because you worked out long ago that it was not for people like you

The urn is heavy when it is full, and she has never once let anybody else carry it down the corridor.

Ten past seven on a Wednesday. Room four is at the far end, past the corkboard with its sign-up sheet and its pen on a string, and the door is propped open with the fire extinguisher because the catch has not held properly since anyone can remember. Inside there are eleven people with the tables pushed into a square, learning how to sit with somebody through a hard night without flinching and without rushing to fix it. She can hear the whole of it from where she stands. She has been hearing it from the corridor for four years.

She sets the urn down on the trestle table just inside the doorway. She lines up the mugs, teaspoons to the right, the way she likes them. Then she goes back out. There is a patch of carpet three steps from that door, worn slightly paler than the rest, and it is the exact place where she turns around every single week. She could find it in the dark.

Nobody has ever told her not to come in. That is the part that is impossible to explain to anyone, which is why she has never tried. There was no letter and no conversation and no unkind face. There was a sign-up sheet with her name written three letters in and then carefully crossed out. Before that there was a phrase somebody used once, years ago, about the kind of person this room really needs. And a long way before that there was a whole childhood of being the one asked, gently and with a smile, to wait outside for a minute.

And you know that patch of carpet, do you not. You know exactly where it is in your own building.

The Carpet Outside Room Four

The door He set there, and who has been guarding it

This is a safe place to be honest about the weight before we try to lift anything.

The hardest boundary to cross is the one nobody drew in ink. A locked door you can at least be honest about; there is something there, and it is outside of you, and you can name it. But a door that was never locked, that has stood propped open with a fire extinguisher every Wednesday of your adult life, and that you still do not walk through, is a different kind of heavy altogether. There is nobody to appeal to. There is nothing to push against. The line got drawn somewhere behind your eyes a long time ago, and it has held for years without one single person maintaining it.

And here is what it has cost you, and I am not going to move past it quickly. You've carried the whole thing as though it were an accurate reading of you. If nobody kept me out, you reason, then the one keeping me out is me, and that means this is not a boundary at all, it is a verdict, and the verdict is about who I am.

It is not a verdict. It is a boundary somebody else drew, most likely without ever meaning to, and you've faithfully maintained a fence that its builder walked away from years ago and does not remember putting up.

Now listen to what the Lord says to a church He describes as having only a little strength.

I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.Revelation 3:8

Read it slowly and notice where the door comes from and who is holding it.

He set it. Not the rota, not the room, not the person who said the thing about the kind of person this needs. He set it, in front of them, deliberately. And then He said the one sentence that answers every question you have ever carried down that corridor: no man can shut it.

The door Christ set before you is open now, and you are not trespassing by standing where He placed you. That is the written Word beneath this declaration, and the Holy Spirit makes it living without turning courage into a formula. The open door rests on His authority, not your intensity.

Then notice who He said it to. Not to the strong congregation. Not to the confident one with the capacity and the credentials and the obvious candidates. He said it to the one He described, in the very same breath, as having a little strength. Little strength was never the disqualification. It was the address on the envelope.

So there are two things that have to be seated before you can receive any of this, and I would rather seat them properly than hurry you.

The first is that God still sets doors in front of ordinary people. Today. In ordinary buildings, with fire extinguishers holding the catch and an urn that needs carrying. An opened door is not something He used to do in a more impressive century.

The second is harder, and it is yours personally: the door He set is set before you. Not before a steadier version of you, a more articulate one, one who is quicker in a room or less tired or less easily overwhelmed by eleven voices at once. Before you, exactly as you came down that corridor tonight, with a heavy urn and nobody helping.

Little strength does not disqualify you from the place God opened. Scripture addresses the open door to a people Christ Himself calls small in strength, and the Holy Spirit carries that word into your actual body, with its tiredness and limits. You do not have to become louder to belong.

And this is where the speaking comes in. Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to the mountain, is enough, and notice that He never once told anybody to plead with a mountain. He told them to speak to it. Which means that the appointed thing to do with a boundary that no one is enforcing is not to wait patiently for it to dissolve, and it is not to earn the right to cross it. It is to open your mouth.

You have delegated authority to speak to the line behind your eyes today. The written Word places that authority in Christ, and the Holy Spirit applies it as relationship rather than incantation. The power is not in perfect wording; it is in the King whose word you represent.

Notice too what He did not hand out. He did not hand out a case to argue, a group to blame, or a list of people who owe you an apology. He handed out a door. Nobody has to have been wrong for you to walk through what Christ has opened, and that is a great mercy, because a person who has to win the argument first will be standing in that corridor a very long time and will arrive in the room angry.

You are free to leave lighter, with no grievance required and no builder to prosecute. Scripture keeps the door in Christ's hand, and the Holy Spirit keeps your freedom warm with mercy. Release is complete even when nobody explains the old line.

The breakthrough

For years, three steps from an open door, you've asked whether permission belonged to you, and the answer was settled two thousand years before the question formed.

Look honestly at what has been happening on that carpet. No refusal was spoken. You've rehearsed one anyway, so faithfully and through so many Wednesdays that it now carries all the weight of a memory. That is not a small thing to have carried and I will not pretend it is. But a rehearsed refusal is not a closed door, and the whole message is in that difference.

Nothing has to be won here. Nobody has to admit anything. There is no group to be angry with, and if you go hunting for one you will certainly find the anger and you will not find the door.

Here is what is true tonight, at ten past seven, with the urn already set down and the mugs already lined up. Christ opened the room beyond your worn patch of carpet, and He did not hand the key to the person whose sentence made you turn around. He kept it in His own hand. What He opened stays open, and no man shuts it, and that includes the version of you standing guard on the outside of a door that was never locked.

You stand inside Christ's open door now, complete and received. Revelation records His settled word, and the Holy Spirit breathes it into this corridor without guaranteeing what anyone else does next. Your freedom is present before the room responds.

Your feet stand where He placed them. They always did.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud, standing, wherever you are reading this. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to walk through what He opened has already been given. The written Word establishes that belonging, and the Holy Spirit makes it living rather than formulaic; this is not a permission somebody forgot to sign. Name the mountain before you say a word to it, because a mountain nobody has named always turns out to be a person. Yours is not the eleven people round those tables, and it is not whoever said the thing about the kind of person this room really needs. It is a line drawn behind your eyes years ago by someone who has long since walked away from it. Christ weighed the least faith there is against the largest thing in the landscape and finished the sentence with nothing shall be impossible unto you, so a line that old is not too old and a corridor that long is not too long. Speak to the line, never to the person, and bless the person as you go. What He does with that room after tonight is His to decide, and however He answers, the door He set before you is open now.

  1. Door, you are open, and no man shuts what Christ has opened, in the name of Jesus. The Word of God says He has set before me an open door and no man can shut it, and He said it to a people He Himself called small in strength.
  2. Line drawn behind my eyes, get off my floor, and take four years of turning around with you. Peace, you come in with me and keep the doorway. The written Word names the Lord my Shepherd, and the Holy Spirit carries His peace through this open door.
  3. Lord, You are the One who opens, and You have never needed my name on a list to know where You placed me. I thank You, because the door stood open the whole time I stood three steps from it, and it is open now with both my feet flat on Your floor.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
