There is a strip of aluminum in the doorway of Room 2, where the corridor vinyl stops and the gray carpet begins. It is four inches wide and has three screws in it, and one of them has been missing since before he started.
He knows it that well because he has stood on it every Tuesday for nine years and he has never once walked past it.
He carries the tea. Four mugs on a tray, sugar in the yellow one, and he brings it up the corridor at twenty past seven while the room is filling. At the doorway he stops, leans in from the waist with the tray held out, and somebody inside takes it off him and says thanks, and he goes back for the biscuits. He has done this perhaps four hundred times. Nobody in that room has ever asked him why he does not come in.
In his first month, the man who ran the place then said something to him by the urn. It was not cruel. It was said kindly, the way a busy man says a thing he will forget by Friday: you are brilliant on the door, so stay on the door and leave the rest of it to us. That man moved away seven years ago. Nobody now sitting in Room 2 was there when it was said. There is no sign on that door. There is no rule in that building with his name on it, and if you asked the four people inside they would tell you they had assumed for years that he simply preferred the corridor.
You know your own version of that strip. You could walk me to it. You know precisely how far you are allowed to go, to the inch, and you have never tested it, and the strange part, the part you have never said out loud to anyone, is that you could not tell me who is enforcing it tonight.

The yoke with nothing on the other end
Paul writes one sentence to people who are already free, and every word of it is doing work.
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.Galatians 5:1
Notice that he does not say get free. He says stand fast in a freedom that is already theirs, in the past tense, done by Christ and finished. And then he says again, which tells you the direction the danger is coming from. It is not in front of them. It is behind them, and it has hands, and it is reaching.
A yoke is a shaped piece of wood. What it does to an animal is not mainly weight, it is angle: it teaches a neck where it is allowed to be, and after long enough the animal keeps the angle whether or not the wood is there. That is the thing you are actually carrying. Not a rule. A shape.
The written Word names Christ’s liberty before it names the old entanglement, and the Holy Spirit bears witness that you are standing in that liberty now.
And here is the whole of your situation, said plainly. The yoke you are wearing is not fastened to anything at the other end. Nobody is holding it. Nobody has been holding it for years. It is not an authority, it is a memory that got up early and got dressed as an authority, and it has been walking around inside you drawing the line at the doorway of Room 2 every Tuesday since.
I want to name what that has cost you before I say another word about freedom, because the written Word and the Holy Spirit meet you where you have been alone with it, and it deserves saying.
You have built a life that fits inside a sentence somebody said to you in passing. You got good at the corridor. You got so good at it that it started to look like humility, and part of you believes it is, and that is the part that hurts, because you cannot tell any more where the modesty ends and the ceiling begins. And there is a grief underneath it that is not about ambition at all. It is the years. It is four hundred Tuesdays of leaning in from the waist. It is knowing that the man who said it has forgotten he said it, and that you have organized nine years around a sentence that took him two seconds and cost him nothing.
Galatians 5:1 does not mock those years, and the Holy Spirit does not shame the neck that learned this angle. You are being addressed as a person Christ has already made free.
Hear this, because it is true and it matters. Those years are not wasted and they are not a failure of faith. The tea was real. The welcome was real. Every one of those four hundred trays could be offered before God as service, and none of it is being handed back to you now as a bill. You are not being scolded here. You are being untied.
Because the freedom Christ hands over is not a permit that expires when the person who issued your limit walks out of the building. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. He said it in the present tense, to ordinary people, in a room, and He never attached a date to it or a distance to it. What He freed is free. That is not a thing you are working towards. It is the ground you are already standing on, with one foot on a strip of aluminum.
The written Word establishes that ground, and the Holy Spirit makes it more than an idea. You have Christ’s liberty as a present possession, whether you cross the strip or keep serving in the corridor.
You have been waiting, without ever putting it into words, for the person who set your limit to come back and lift it.
The written Word assigns freedom to the Son, not to the speaker from nine years ago, and the Holy Spirit bears witness that you are not waiting for a human rescission.
That is the shape of it. Somewhere in you there is a small, patient, entirely reasonable expectation that permission will arrive from the same direction the restriction did, and that until then it would be presumptuous to move. And the honest news is that he is not coming back. He has moved away. He has forgotten. He would be genuinely baffled to hear what his two seconds became.
Which is exactly why you can go free tonight. What nobody is holding cannot be taken back. There is no one at the other end of that rope to tug it, no one to be disappointed, no one to withdraw anything, because the only place the ceiling still exists is in a man who has been standing under it out of habit. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to the mountain, is enough, and He was not describing an unusual amount of faith. He was describing a very small amount aimed at the right thing. Aim it at the strip of metal.
Scripture gives you liberty without requiring spectacle, and the Holy Spirit keeps that liberty warm and clean. You are free before the distance changes.
And hear the other half, because it is just as much of the freedom. Being free does not mean you have to do anything larger next week. It does not mean the room, the platform, the wider work, the bigger version. You may walk through that doorway on Tuesday and sit down. You may also carry the tray for another nine years and be as free as any man alive doing it, because freedom is not measured in distance covered. A free man handing in a tray of tea is free. The difference is not where he stands. It is that he is standing there because he chose it, and not because a sentence from nine years ago is still deciding for him.
Galatians 5:1 and the Holy Spirit agree at this threshold: you have a freedom that does not need to prove itself by entering any room.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud, on your feet, with your hand up. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to say these words was given to you at the cross and does not need re-issuing by the person who set your limit. This is not you forcing a door. It is a key turning in a lock God already opened, and what He does with the rest of your Tuesdays after tonight is His to decide, however He answers.
- Ceiling, you are not mine and I do not live under you, and I say so in the name of Jesus. The written Word says to stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free, and the Holy Spirit bears witness that a memory has no covenant right to shape my neck.
- Sentence spoken in a doorway nine years ago, get out of my walking. The written Word says Jesus is the Son who makes a person free indeed, and the Holy Spirit confirms that what He has freed does not wait for the return of the man who drew the line. I am free, and I am walking free now.
- Lord, You are my freedom, and You have never measured a free man by the distance he walked. Your written Word establishes my liberty and Your Holy Spirit makes it present, so tonight I stand where You put me with nothing fastened to my neck.
